Pharmaceutical Grade vs Aquarium Methylene Blue
Same molecule. Completely different product. The difference is a purity standard you can't see on the label — and it's the reason cheap Methylene Blue is cheap.
| VitaBlue USP Grade | Aquarium / Industrial | |
|---|---|---|
| Purity standard | Meets the US Pharmaceutical standard | No published standard |
| Lab testing | Independent lab, every batch | Not required |
| Made for | Human supplement use | Dyeing fabric, staining slides, fish tanks |
| Heavy metals | Tested against strict limits | Possible, and unmeasured |
| What's inside | Two things. Methylene Blue and distilled water | Usually undisclosed |
| Looks like | Deep blue liquid | Deep blue liquid |
That last row is the problem. You cannot tell them apart by looking.
What's In The Bottle
No preservatives. No sweeteners. No alcohol. No carrier oils. Which is also why it needs to stay sealed and out of direct light.
Methylene Blue Side Effects And Drug Interactions
Methylene Blue is an MAO inhibitor. Read this before your first dose.
Taken with antidepressants, it can trigger serotonin syndrome — a real and potentially serious reaction. The US FDA issued a formal safety warning about this in 2011.
Do not take Methylene Blue with SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs or tricyclic antidepressants without talking to your doctor first.
Also avoid if you have G6PD deficiency, if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you're under 18.
Blue or green urine is normal and harmless.

Common Questions
What is Methylene Blue?
A synthetic blue compound first made in 1876. It dissolves in water and turns a deep blue. It's listed in the United States Pharmacopeia, which sets an official standard for how pure it has to be and how much of any contaminant is allowed.
That standard is what "USP grade" actually means. It's a lab specification with numbers behind it, not a phrase a brand can give itself.
What's the difference between USP grade and aquarium Methylene Blue?
Purity, and nothing you can see. Aquarium and lab-stain Methylene Blue is made to industrial grade — manufactured to be blue, not manufactured to a purity standard. It can carry heavy metal residues that don't matter when you're treating a fish tank.
USP grade is tested against published limits. Same colour, different contaminant profile.
How much Methylene Blue should I take?
Most people start with 1–3 mg in the morning and adjust from there. One drop is around 250 mcg, so 4 drops is roughly 1 mg.
Always dilute in water first. Speak to a healthcare professional before starting, particularly if you take any prescription medication.
Can you take Methylene Blue with antidepressants?
Not without medical supervision. Methylene Blue is an MAO inhibitor, and combining it with SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs or tricyclics risks serotonin syndrome. The FDA has issued a formal warning on this. Talk to your doctor before combining anything.
Does Methylene Blue stain your teeth?
Undiluted, yes — it's a dye. Always dilute it in water and drink it rather than dropping it straight onto your tongue. It will also stain fabric and worktops, permanently on anything porous. Rinse whatever it touches straight away.
Why does Methylene Blue turn your urine blue?
Because it's a dye, and your body clears what it doesn't use through the kidneys. Blue or blue-green urine is expected and harmless.
How long does one bottle last?
About 600 drops at roughly 250 mcg each. At 1 mg a day — four drops — a 30 ml bottle lasts around five months.
Why glass instead of plastic?
Methylene Blue is light-sensitive and stains plastic. Glass protects the liquid and lets you see how much is left without opening it.
Should I get the drops or the spray?
Drops if it lives at home — the glass dropper gives you finer control over the dose. Nano spray if it travels with you, because a glass dropper in a bag is a bad idea. Same liquid, same strength, both ways.

How much Methylene Blue should I start with?
Studies show doses between 5 mg - 15 mg are effective and 90% of people report 5 mg to be their go-to dose. That’s just 20 drops from our tincture, or 15 sprays from Nano! However, please start small, and consult our blog post on proper dosages and administration, as well as our Health Disclaimer.
Does Methylene Blue break a fast?
No, it actually synergises and speeds up the effects of a fast! Mitophagy is sped up by combining MB and fasting, we covered this on our blog post.
Will Methylene Blue make my pee green and my tongue blue?
Yes! This is normal. It will vary from day to day depending on the dose, hydration levels, micronutrients in your food intake and how you administer it. Methylene Blue is a very strong blue dye and should be treated carefully, we covered everything on safe handling, doses, administration and even taste in our blog post.
How is this different from Nano?
Both products use the same USP-grade methylene blue. Drops come in a 30 ml glass dropper bottle (150 mg total) — best for at-home daily use and precise dose-by-dose control. Nano is a 15 ml travel spray (75 mg total) — best for on-the-go, no measuring, no leaks.
How long does a bottle last?
A 30 ml bottle holds roughly 600 drops. At a typical 1–3 mg daily dose (4–12 drops), a single bottle lasts most users between 7 and 12 weeks.
Why USP grade matters
USP (United States Pharmacopeia) is the highest purity standard. It guarantees the methylene blue is free of heavy metals, contaminants, and fillers. Industrial-grade methylene blue (sold for aquariums or fabric dye) is *not* the same product and should never be consumed.
How quickly does it work?
Most users report noticing effects within 15–30 minutes of taking it on an empty stomach. Effects typically last 4–6 hours.
Will it stain things?
Yes. Methylene blue is a strong dye. Use the dropper carefully, avoid white fabric and surfaces, and rinse glassware immediately after use. Mixing with water or juice (instead of dropping directly on the tongue) reduces — but doesn't eliminate — tongue staining.
Can I take it with coffee?
There's no known interaction between methylene blue and caffeine. Many users take both. The relevant interaction warning is with SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, and other serotonergic drugs — see our dosing guide and Health Disclaimer.
How do you ship?
Orders placed before our daily cutoff ship within 24 business hours from the Netherlands. EU delivery is typically 2–5 business days. International delivery varies — see our Shipping Policy.
