What pharmaceutical grade actually means

Grade is a purity standard, not a marketing word. USP pharmaceutical grade methylene blue is manufactured and verified against the United States Pharmacopeia monograph, which sets limits on the compound itself and on what else is allowed to be in the container.

Below that sit reagent grade, technical grade, and industrial dye. Each step down is cheaper. Each step down permits more residual solvents, more heavy metals, and more related dye compounds left over from synthesis. All four grades are the same molecule on the label. They are not the same material in the bottle.

How to read a certificate of analysis

A real COA names four things. If any of them is missing, it is a marketing document, not a test result.

• The laboratory. An independent accredited lab, named, not the manufacturer testing its own output.
• The batch number. Tied to the specific production run, so it can be matched to the bottle you received.
• The methods. Which assays were run and against which standard.
• The limits. Actual measured values next to the permitted thresholds, not a bare word like passed.

Why we publish this

Purity is not something you can see, taste, or verify at home. A supplier can print any grade they like on a label, and most of this market is counting on nobody checking.

Is all methylene blue the same?

No. The same molecule is sold at industrial, technical, reagent, and pharmaceutical grade. The difference is what else is permitted to remain alongside it after synthesis. Only pharmaceutical grade is verified against a pharmacopeial purity standard.

How can I tell what grade I am buying?

Ask for the certificate of analysis for the batch you received. A seller who cannot produce a batch-specific COA from a named independent laboratory has not tested that batch.
